yeah, I don't get it... In what way did the Tauren or the Draenei "jump the shark" ?

Assuming that was the joke part, I wasn't sure about the spaceship part. From an industry that adds races on the moon in a fantasy game, anything goes I suppose

Hehehe ... "sabotaged their dimension ship". Go Blizz. ("Jumping the shark")

Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yep, I knew what "jump the shark" meant

Yet knowing helped me naught when trying to get the joke... Lets see...

The Tauren race Jumped the Shark? They were a desperate attempt to retain the games greatness and once they were added (in um, ALPHA or before, perhaps an initial design phase) the World of Warcraft went downhill....?

Nope, doesn't make any more sense now than it did before :)

Think it's more of a subtle hint towards Blizzard. and it's a good one too.

i dont get it.....something about the new race and taurens not part of lore at all.....

Lol Jumping the Shark. It's a term often used in Television, means that a show has reached it's peak.

It stems from the show Happy Days in where the lead character literally jumped over a shark and the show was never quite as good after that.

It's not that Tauren "jumped the shark", it's that Blizzard did by adding backstory to a new race that involves space travelling dimmension ships.

Although I agree that Tile should make some more comics involving stick figures and margarine.

And a Learn 2 Play Auction House Mule strip.

lol jumped the shark. Learnt a new term today. Thanks for the wiki link.

I approve of the Draenei personally. Very nice backstory to the Burning Legion. The Dimensional Ship is a bit..... odd to say the least. Well I guess that means the goblins and gnomes have got nothing on the Draenei.

Contradicting your history....a game company's best friend.

i laughed at the end part.

Is it just me... or are the draenei males like a Nelf mated with a Tauren... and the draenei females like a Nelf mated with a Troll?

Contradicting game history huh? That's kinda funny considering they haven't written everything yet. As far as this game is concerned Blizzard is God and can do whatever they want with it. "Let there be space-faring, light-blessed aliens!"

2:13 AM, May 14, 2006
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yeah, hasn't written anything. Except you know, all those books based on (most of which are 'offically' part of the lore, thanks to Metzen). And those RPG books too, those have a lot of lore. And the story of Warcraft 3--you know, Archimonde and the Eredar?

But you're right. Interdimensional spaceships in a fantasy setting with characters that can develop the technology to traverse space but apparently haven't developed a better weapon than a sharp, pointy thing isn't a little ridiclious even in a setting with magic and dragons at all.

of all the lore twists, the ship was by far the most unnessesary.
they already have a reason for them too be on the alliance.

The word is "everything" not "anything". I am well aware they have written quite a bit of lore. There is still a great deal more that has yet to be written though and that gives a lot of leeway. I do agree that the ship is fairly over-the-top but it's not completely implausible in a world of magic. Just say it's powered by magic instead of technology and there you have it. I still remember the Spelljammer world from AD&D.

Aaaah, I get it now! I thought the space faring bit was rather, well, enormously contrived, but I couldn't figure how the tauren fit into the mix.

Thankies for the explanation.

chris metzen posted on teh forums, admitting that he had forgotten to check the existing eredar lore when he made the Dranie lore.
also, the ship is not a ship, it is more like a fortress that can move through dimensions through magic. it was sabotauged by the blood elves in outland

Haw! Well said!

Though, it makes me depressed to realize that I'm old enough that I actually SAW that Happy Days episode where the Fonz jumped the shark (literally - water-skiing), back when I was a kid. (It was a pretty dumb episode.)

I see that you shall have posters criticizing that you dare to suggest that the addition of the Draenei "jumped the shark" - but have faith! There are quite a few of us who agree with you. (Well, me and my wife, anyway. So that's technically an "us".)

Carry on! Your comics are an inspiration.

the "tauren stole their shark and jumped over it" thing is class!
i think it is not saying that burning crusade is "jumping the shark"
before i knew what i meant i thought the juping the shark thing was just hilariously random and it wasa much better that way.

Maybe I'll wake up in the shower and find out that last season, er, the Draenei, was just a dream...

Actually, Blizz stopped just short of the worst sort of space sci-fi vehicle, time travel... Oh, wait, time travel is going to be in the expansion, too...

What I'd like to see is instead of a corpse run, a battle 'rewind' button.
